Maine Lakes BrewFest 2017 Review
Every year for the past 3 years few friends and I head up to Casco, ME for the Point Sebago BrewFest. It is always one of the best weekends. I know I’ve always said that CountryFest is the best day of the year but BrewFest is the best weekend because every year we’ve gone it never disappoints.
We usually take the Thursday before off from work, drive up to Maine, and drink. Last year we made the rookie mistake of not making any plans for Friday and just drank all day. Because of this, come Saturday morning we almost didn’t make it to the main event.
But miraculously the closer we get to thirty the wiser we get. Hence this year we planned ahead and decided to check out the Shipyard Brewery on the Friday before. We took a free tour, which was actually very informative. It lasted for about 45 minutes ending in beer flights. For only $6 we tried the four freshest beers I’ve ever had. I chose Monkeyfist IPA, Finder IPA, Little Horror of Hops, and Bourbon Barrel Aged Smashed Pumpkin. The Smashed Pumpkin was by far the best in my opinion. It had a great pumpkin taste but was not too sweet like some of the other pumpkin beers. Also it was 11% which will literally get you smashed.
After we finished the flights we went to their gift shop and I bought the most basic bitch sweatshirt of all time! Being the idiot that I am, I had forgotten go pack a sweatshirt and jeans. Therefore I needed a sweatshirt I had to go all out. Let me tell you this is the comfiest sweatshirt I’ve ever owned! I can’t let my girlfriend wear it because I know I’ll never get it back after.
BrewFest is held on Saturday and is a LONG day of drinking. The first year we went they gave everyone five tickets, receiving one ticket per beer. Well, as you can imagine the brewers didn’t really care about the tickets and would just fill your cup up anyways. Ever since then they just did away with the ticket system.
Here we go!
Witches Tit – Bigelow Brewing Company This fall beer is a nice change of pace from your basic Pumpkinhead. It’s not as sweet and let’s be honest, it’s the funniest name ever for a beer!
Yamityville Horror – Burnside Brewing Company
If you couldn’t tell already, I’m a sucker for Fall beers, especially ones with punny names. This beer is actually brewed with yams which I thought it was going to be terrible. Well, it’s a good thing I’m always wrong because this beer was delicious!
Pecan Pie Porter – Clown Shoes Brewing Company
This beer was ah-mazing! It is the perfect beer for Thanksgiving and I’m going to be drinking it all November and at 10.5% ABV it will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
After BrewFest we do the same thing every year: Stuff our faces with poutine.
If you’ve never had poutine, then do yourself a favor and go find some. It’s basically French fries with cheese curds topped with gravy. The poutine truck always has the longest line and rightfully so! I’m a little upset because they had a Thanksgiving style this year and because we didn’t get in line soon enough we didn’t get any since they had sold out. Instead we ended up getting Buffalo chicken and it did not disappoint.
Going to BrewFest has become a yearly tradition with my best friends. Every year I look forward to it and once it’s over I’m starting the countdown for the next year.
Only 10 Months till Brewfest 2018!
