Tonight’s SummerSlam 2017 Match Card
Tonight the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY will host SummerSlam 2017. SummerSlam is WWE’s second-biggest show of the year next to WrestleMania. The card has some matchups with some real potential and a chance for some real stinkers too. Here’s the match card in its entirety (obviously not in order.) I have highlighted the must-see matches in orange.
Jason Jordan and The Hardy Boyz vs. The Miz and The Miztourage – I have hated this story line from the beginning and I’m sorry to see the Hardy Boyz have somehow been dragged into it. Apparently, The Miz was not enough to help elevate the Jason Jordan/Kurt Angle “Daddy Issues” storyline.
The New Day (c) vs. The Usos (SmackDown Tag Team Championships)- The New Day will retain the titles. They are just too electric on the mic and the kids LOVE them. The New Day moves merch. Although the Usos have made push lately with this sort-of hip-hop gimmick they have going, they just don’t have the impact The New Day has as your W-W-E WORLD TAG-TEAM CHAMPIOOOOOONS!
Akira Tozawa (c) vs. Neville (Cruiserweight Championship)- Cruiserweight matches on the pre-show almost always bring the heat. Neville vs. Austin Aries at Wrestlemania was one of the best matches on the entire card. I could see the finish of this one going either way because of the uncertainty of the Cruiserweight division going forward. Neville should be on the main roster anyway.
Big Show vs. Big Cass– Enzo Amore will be suspended above the ring in a shark tank for this one. This match could go either way, but I think Big Cass comes out of the match getting a huge push as a heel. Hopefully, this is the end of the feud with Enzo.
Randy Orton vs. Rusev– Go ahead and get up and get a cold beverage when this match comes on. I love Orton and Rusev is good in the ring, but there is zero reason for either of these guys to have a match tonight.
John Cena vs. Baron Corbin– It’s going to be a late Sunday night and probably a slow-moving Monday morning because of it. Get Monday’s lunch ready during this match. It’s looking like Cena will win because of the reported heat Baron Corbin has been receiving backstage. He did something to piss Vince off.
Sheamus & Cesaro (c) vs. Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins (Raw Tag Team Championships)– I need Ambrose and Seth Rollins to be the Raw Tag Team Champs more than I need air to breathe. They both need this bump right now more than ever. It’s perfect spot to get these 2 former members of The Shield headed back in the right direction.
Naomi (c) vs. Natalya (SmackDown Women’s Championship)– Watch Naomi’s entrance then grab another beverage and hit the bathroom. Get well soon Ric Flair. We need Charlotte back in the ring.
Alexa Bliss (c) vs. Sasha Banks (Raw Women’s Championship)– The is the women’s match to watch. Bliss and Banks are both strong characters and polished performers. Also, shout out to this kid…
Finn Balor vs. Bray Wyatt– The ring entrances for this match alone will be worth the price of admission. Finn “Demon King” Balor and Bray “Eater of Worlds” Wyatt. I, for one, can’t wait to stand up in my living room do the “AHHH!”s along with Balor. As long as the keep the gimmicks to a minimum once the bell rings, the match itself should be great too.
AJ Styles (c) vs. Kevin Owens (United States Championship)– SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon will be the special guest referee for this match. It will interesting to see what role Shane-O will play in the match. You would think he would favor AJ since Owens kicked him in the head 2 weeks ago on SmackDown Live, but as a close friend of mine would say “90% of the time we know what’s going to happen in WWE, but we watch for the 10%.” Styles and Owens are 2 of the better in-ring performers in WWE today, and they always put on a show. I would think AJ retains, but anything is possible in this one.
Jinder Mahal (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura (WWE Championship)– This match is pretty cut and dry. Nakamura’s entrance will be electric as usual. After that, it should be a fairly quick match. Nakamura walks out WWE Champ. If Jinder Mahal somehow retains I am predicting that Brooklyn will riot.
Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Roman Reigns vs. Samoa Joe vs. Braun Strowman (Fatal 4-Way, Universal Championship)– I have high expectations for this main event, and the only certainty I have in terms of a result is that Brock Lesnar will not retain the Universal Championship. I would love to see Braun Strowman win the title. He has grown a ton as a wrestler so far in 2017 and has helped Roman Reigns stay relevant. Samoa Joe has also had a great run since he burst on the scene early this year. His match with Brock at Great Balls of Fire got him high praise from The Beast Incarnate himself. The only way I would even entertain the thought of Roman Reigns winning is if Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins win their match for the Raw Tag Team Championships and somehow interfere in the main event to reunite The Shield. Otherwise, I hope Braun or Joe walk out of Brooklyn Universal Champion, and if I had to pick one give me Braun Strowman.
One last thing to pay attention to tonight is the Brooklyn crowd. They will be on their A game as they always are. Some of the best WWE fans in the world are in BK and they will bring the house down tonight. Enjoy the show!
